Healing Through Honesty: My Conversation on Uncle Jimmy’s Podcast

When we discuss faith, failure, and becoming who God designed us to be, authenticity is crucial. Recently, I had the privilege of joining Uncle Jimmy’s Podcast to share my story — from my years as a U.S. Air Force photographer serving in Afghanistan to my 20-year battle with addiction, and the redemption that came through faith and recovery.

This powerful conversation explored what it means to stop hiding, start healing, and let God use even our broken pieces for something beautiful.

From the Air Force to Addiction Recovery

In the interview, Jimmy introduced me by saying, “Wesley’s story proves that transformation is possible — that failure doesn’t define us, it refines us.”

I shared about my background growing up as a pastor’s kid — and how my desire to be accepted by everyone led to years of codependency. I became what I call a “master chameleon,” someone who could fit into any group or environment while hiding what was really happening inside.

That same people-pleasing fear of rejection led me down a dark path as a teenager. At fifteen, curiosity and shame opened the door to an addiction to pornography that lasted two decades. I told myself I could stop anytime, that I was fine — but I wasn’t.

Like many men, I wore the mask well. I went to church, led ministries, and tried to manage my own recovery in silence. But real change didn’t begin until I admitted that I couldn’t fix myself.

Discovering Celebrate Recovery and Real Freedom

In 2019, I heard my church announce the launch of Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered program for anyone struggling with a hurt, habit, or hang-up.

“At first,” I told Jimmy, “I thought, that’s great for people with real addictions like drugs or alcohol — not me.” But then I learned that only one in three participants come for those issues. The rest are there for things like anger, anxiety, broken relationships, or codependency.

That realization changed everything.

Walking into my first meeting was terrifying — I had to admit I wasn’t perfect. But instead of judgment, I found love and acceptance. That night marked the start of my healing journey.

The Moment God Changed My Story

During that season, a scene from A Knight’s Tale became a defining metaphor for my recovery. In the movie, a young boy dreams of becoming a knight, only to be told, “You can’t change your stars.”

As I prayed through that scene, I felt God speak clearly:

“You may have been a peasant in your past, but through Me, you’ve been adopted into royalty.”

That idea — changing your stars — became the heartbeat of my book, The Blueprint of Becoming: A Practical Guide to Faith, Failure, and Finding Your Way Forward.

In the podcast, I explained how every aspect of our lives — our choices, relationships, habits, and beliefs — forms a constellation. When God becomes our North Star, He guides us on our path toward purpose and redemption.

Serving in Afghanistan: Seeing People Through the Lens of Compassion

Jimmy and I also talked about my time as a military photographer deployed to Afghanistan. I described the Afghan people as “incredibly hospitable — always offering tea, always calling you friend.”

As part of a Provincial Reconstruction Team, my job was to photograph the rebuilding of local communities — schools, roads, and infrastructure. “It was one of the most rewarding seasons of my life,” I shared. “We were documenting hope.”

That experience taught me to see people, not just photograph them. Behind every uniform or cultural difference is a story — one of courage, fear, or love. Photography became a ministry of empathy.

Faith, Failure, and Finding Purpose

Much of our conversation centered on how faith evolves when life falls apart. For me, faith used to be a rulebook — something to follow perfectly. Now, it’s a relationship with a God who isn’t waiting for perfection but invites surrender.

“Faith isn’t about how strong I am,” I told Jimmy. “It’s about how surrendered I’m willing to be.”

That shift changed everything. My failures became the soil where transformation could grow. As I wrote in The Blueprint of Becoming, “God can’t fill what’s already full of self-sufficiency.”

Encouraging Men to Drop the Mask

Since November is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we closed the interview by addressing how men — especially veterans — often struggle to admit they’re not okay.

“It’s okay to not be okay,” I said. “Asking for help isn’t weakness; it’s strength.”

For men who feel isolated or ashamed, I encouraged finding a safe community — whether it’s Celebrate Recovery, counseling, or one trusted friend. Healing begins with honesty.

Uncle Jimmy shared the national crisis lifeline for anyone in distress: Call or text 988 for 24/7 confidential support.

Practical Faith: The Blueprint for Everyday Life

We also discussed the four daily practices that help me stay grounded in recovery and faith:

  1. Prayer – an ongoing, all-day conversation with God.

  2. Scripture – letting His Word shape my perspective.

  3. Worship – keeping my mind and soul focused through music.

  4. Community – staying connected with people who hold me accountable and point me back to Christ.

The Message Behind the Microphone

At the end of the episode, Jimmy asked me what single piece of advice I’d give to listeners. My answer was simple:

“Stop hiding and start healing. Don’t waste years trying to impress people when God’s already called you for a reason.”

That’s the essence of everything I share — in my book, in my coaching, and on every stage or podcast I visit. Change isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being real.
