Kevin’s Last Walk: A Father’s Journey of Grief and Purpose | Unmasked Episode 22
NOTE: This is one of the most powerful episodes I’ve recorded yet. To be in this father’s shoes is something I pray I never have to experience as a father. If you’ve been there, please know that you’re not alone! Special thanks to Barry for sharing his story with this Unmasked community. Please check out his contact links at the bottom of this post.
When unimaginable loss strikes, it reshapes everything—your identity, your faith, your sense of purpose. In Episode 22 of Unmasked, Wesley sits down with Barry Adkins, a father who lived through every parent’s worst nightmare: the sudden loss of his 18-year-old son, Kevin, to alcohol poisoning.
But out of that grief came a mission that would change thousands of lives.
Barry placed Kevin’s ashes in a backpack and walked 1,400 miles from Arizona to Montana—sharing his son’s story in schools, churches, and communities along the way. What began as a journey of mourning became a journey of purpose, hope, and ultimately, forgiveness.
A Night That Changed Everything
Barry recalls the last normal moment he had with his son:
A hug.
A quick “love you.”
A promise to grab his toothbrush the next morning.
Hours later, Kevin’s friends called 911. He had passed out after drinking heavily—never waking up again. Barry and his wife learned the news the next morning when officers arrived at their home with a driver’s license and a sentence no parent is ready to hear.
It shattered him.
A Supernatural Moment
Just days later, in the early hours of the morning, Barry experienced what he believes was a divine encounter—a message that Kevin did not suffer, and that something “very good” would come from this tragedy.
That moment did not erase the pain, but it gave him direction.
Kevin’s Last Walk
Choosing not to be a victim, Barry created a mission from his son’s story. Instead of letting grief destroy him, he used it as fuel.
Here’s what the walk accomplished:
1,400 miles traveled
35–40 speaking engagements during the journey
Hundreds of lives impacted on the road
400,000+ people reached since
Barry shares stories of strangers who stopped to help, students who opened up to him, and families who were forever changed after hearing Kevin’s story.
Forgiveness: The Hardest Battle
One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is Barry’s honesty about forgiveness—not toward others, but toward himself.
He explains:
“Anger and vengeance always lead to destruction. Forgiveness leads to healing. And sometimes the most important person you need to forgive is yourself.”
Barry also opens up about how his faith was shaken, rebuilt, and reshaped through this journey. His grief forced him to confront hard questions—but it also revealed God’s nearness in ways he never expected.
The Million Mile Challenge
Today, Barry is launching the Million Mile Challenge, inviting people everywhere to walk in memory of someone they love or someone they’re praying for. Whether it’s one mile or a hundred, every step is part of a larger story.
