Childhood Trauma and Identity: Lawyer Johnson’s Story
Childhood trauma rarely stays in childhood.
For many men, it quietly becomes part of their identity, shaping how they see the world, how they trust others, and how they respond to pain.
In this episode of UNMASKED, Wesley Farnsworth speaks with author and trauma advocate Lawyer Johnson, whose life story includes childhood sexual abuse, incarceration, and decades of silence before he began confronting the truth of his past.
This conversation explores how childhood trauma and identity become deeply connected—and how healing begins when silence finally breaks.

How Childhood Trauma and Identity Become Connected
Many people assume trauma instantly defines a person’s life. The reality is often quieter.
Trauma slowly influences identity through behaviors, reactions, and beliefs about the world.
For Lawyer Johnson, childhood began with joy and normalcy. Growing up in Newburgh, New York, he described a childhood filled with music, imagination, and family.
But one moment changed everything.
At seven years old, he experienced sexual abuse by a trusted adult. Like many children in similar situations, he didn’t have the emotional language or safety to process what happened.
The result was silence.
And that silence became the beginning of a long connection between childhood trauma and identity.
The Hidden Cost of Silence
One of the strongest themes in this conversation is how silence shapes a person’s life.
Many men are taught early that strength means endurance. Pain is supposed to be absorbed quietly.
But silence has consequences.
Unaddressed trauma can appear in unexpected ways:
anger and aggression
distrust in relationships
emotional distance from family
risky behaviors
constant hyper-awareness or defensiveness
For Johnson, unresolved pain influenced decisions throughout adulthood. It affected relationships and contributed to destructive patterns that eventually led to incarceration.
These patterns are not unusual. Childhood trauma and identity are often linked in ways people don’t recognize until much later.

Why Many Men Stay Silent About Trauma
Many men are taught three damaging ideas:
vulnerability equals weakness
strength means emotional silence
pain should be handled alone
These beliefs create a cycle.
Trauma remains hidden.
Silence prevents healing.
Pain continues shaping identity.
Johnson explains that many men suffer quietly for decades because they fear judgment, rejection, or being seen differently.
But breaking that silence is often the first real step toward reclaiming identity.
When Survival Is No Longer Enough
Healing often begins when surviving no longer feels sustainable.
For Johnson, that turning point came in marriage.
His wife noticed patterns of emotional withdrawal and unresolved pain. Instead of stepping back, she encouraged counseling—not to shame him, but to understand him better.
That became a pivotal shift.
Counseling, self-reflection, and trauma education helped him begin processing what had remained buried for decades.
This stage marked the change from survival toward healing.
Understanding childhood trauma and identity means recognizing that survival strategies once used for protection may now be sabotaging relationships, purpose, and peace.
How Faith Changed the Healing Process
Another major element of Johnson’s healing was faith.
For him, faith became structure.
It grounded him in:
prayer
discipline
accountability
clearer purpose
distance from unhealthy influences
Faith also reframed his past. Instead of seeing trauma as the final word on his life, he began to see it as one chapter in a larger story.
That shift gave him the courage to move from silence into advocacy.
Turning Pain Into Purpose
Eventually Johnson had to decide whether his past would keep defining him—or whether he would use it to serve others.
He chose purpose.
Today he is:
an author
an entrepreneur
a trauma advocate
a speaker encouraging men to confront hidden pain
His memoir, My Pain Is My Identity, is a raw look at abuse, incarceration, faith, and emotional healing.

This is where childhood trauma and identity shifts. Pain stops being a private prison and becomes a point of connection and service.
Your Past Explains You—But It Doesn’t Define You
One of the strongest lines from the episode is this:
Your past explains you.
It does not define you.
That difference matters.
Your past tells the truth about where you started.
Your present choices shape where the story goes from here.
That’s the hope at the center of this conversation.
Not denial.
Not pretending.
Not hype.
A clearer understanding that healing is possible when silence ends and honesty begins.
