Living Unmasked: Wesley Farnsworth on Identity, Shame, and Real Change

A Conversation About Identity and Change

In a recent appearance on The Making of Me Podcast, Wesley Farnsworth shared a deeply honest conversation about identity and change, exploring how hidden struggles, shame, and addiction can slowly reshape a person’s sense of self.

The discussion went far beyond surface-level inspiration. It focused on what really happens when someone spends years living behind a mask—trying to fit expectations, avoid rejection, and hide pain that no one else can see.

At the center of the conversation was a powerful truth:

Real identity and change begin when honesty replaces hiding.

How Identity Struggles Begin

Wesley explained that many of his identity struggles began early in life.

Growing up as a pastor’s kid, he carried internal pressure to present himself a certain way. While much of that pressure was self-imposed, it shaped the decisions he made and the person he became publicly.

Instead of making choices based on who he truly was, he often made decisions based on what he believed others expected from him .

Over time, that pattern caused him to slowly lose touch with his authentic identity.

Living Behind the Mask

One of the strongest themes throughout the episode was the idea of living “masked.”

Wesley described how he learned to present the version of himself that people wanted to see. When asked how he was doing, he gave the same answers most people give:

  • “I’m fine.”
  • “I’m blessed.”
  • “Everything’s good.”

But internally, things were very different.

Because he never felt safe enough to fully open up, he carried hidden struggles in silence. That silence eventually led to pornography addiction during his teenage years—a struggle that would continue for many years.

The mask became both protection and prison.

The Connection Between Shame and Identity

The conversation highlighted how shame can slowly become part of someone’s identity.

Wesley explained that addiction itself was not the root issue—it was a symptom. Through recovery work and deep self-reflection, he eventually discovered that the real root issue was codependency: caring more about what others thought about him than what he believed about himself or what God said about him.

That realization changed everything.

Once he identified the root cause, he was finally able to begin addressing the deeper issues driving the addiction instead of only fighting the symptoms.

This became a major turning point in his journey toward identity and change.

The Breaking Point That Led to Freedom

Although there wasn’t one dramatic moment that changed everything instantly, Wesley pointed to discovering Celebrate Recovery around 2018–2019 as the major breakthrough.

For the first time, he encountered an environment where it was okay to admit he was struggling.

That mattered.

Because shame survives in secrecy.

During one meeting, he finally admitted the truth about his addiction to another person. In that moment, the grip of shame began to break, and healing became possible.

As he described it, taking off the mask became the beginning of freedom.

Why Identity and Change Take Time

Another major insight from the episode was this:

Transformation is a process—not an overnight event.

Wesley emphasized that many people want immediate change, but real healing happens slowly. It requires honesty, reflection, accountability, and intentional growth over time.

For him, rebuilding identity meant asking difficult questions:

  • Why do I need approval so badly?
  • Why do I fear rejection?
  • Why do I care more about others’ opinions than my own?

As he worked through those deeper questions, the outward struggles slowly began to lose power.

That’s what true identity and change look like—not pretending to become someone new overnight, but gradually becoming who you were created to be.

The Role of Faith in Transformation

Faith played a central role throughout Wesley’s story.

He shared how God consistently provided for him during difficult seasons, including a period when he was unemployed for nine months. Despite uncertainty and financial pressure, he experienced provision in ways he could not explain naturally.

Those moments reinforced his belief that identity is ultimately not rooted in failure, addiction, or past mistakes.

It’s rooted in being a child of God.

That shift—from identifying with shame to identifying with faith—became foundational to his transformation.

Why Shame Loses Power When You Speak About It

One of the most impactful moments in the conversation came when Wesley discussed how the enemy uses shame to isolate people.

He explained that many people believe their struggles are unique—that no one else could possibly understand what they’re facing. But that isolation is exactly what keeps people trapped.

The solution isn’t pretending the struggle doesn’t exist.

The solution is bringing it into the light.

Once shame is exposed through honesty and safe community, it begins to lose its control.

That message sits at the heart of both Wesley’s work and his mission moving forward.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

Today, Wesley uses his story to help others navigate their own journeys of identity and change.

Through:

  • his book The Blueprint of Becoming
  • his podcast Unmasked with Wesley Farnsworth
  • speaking engagements
  • and his nonprofit, Service Ministries

he is helping people understand that transformation is possible.

Not because people are perfect.

But because healing begins when honesty does.

Why This Conversation Matters

This conversation matters because many people are quietly living behind masks.

They appear fine externally while internally battling:

  • shame
  • addiction
  • fear
  • insecurity
  • identity confusion

The message of this episode is simple but powerful:

You are not defined by what happened to you.
You are not defined by your worst struggle.
Real identity and change are possible.
