The Hidden Addiction of Success

Most people recognize addictions to alcohol, drugs, gambling, or pornography. Few people recognize addiction to achievement.

That is exactly what Kenny Stoddart discusses in Episode 59 of UNMASKED.

For decades, Kenny built a successful career in cybersecurity sales, leadership, and executive performance. From the outside, his life looked impressive. Internally, however, he was carrying pressure, unresolved pain, burnout, and a growing dependence on achievement as a source of identity.

His story reveals an important truth: success can become an addiction when our worth becomes tied to performance.

Why Success Can Become an Addiction

Many high achievers spend years chasing the next finish line.

The next promotion.

The next bonus.

The next award.

The next accomplishment.

At first, ambition can be healthy. Problems begin when achievement becomes the primary source of identity.

Kenny described how an experience from his teenage years created a deep need to prove himself. Being expelled from high school left him carrying shame that followed him into adulthood. Instead of processing the pain, he buried it beneath accomplishments.

That pursuit led him to remarkable professional success.

It also nearly destroyed him.

The Dangerous Cycle of Achievement

Achievement produces recognition.

Recognition produces validation.

Validation creates a temporary sense of worth.

When that feeling fades, many people pursue another accomplishment to recreate it.

Over time, the cycle becomes difficult to escape.

For many professionals, business owners, executives, pastors, and leaders, this pattern can become just as destructive as any other addiction.

Burnout Happens in Silence

One of the strongest themes from Kenny’s story is how burnout often develops unnoticed.

Burnout rarely arrives all at once.

It develops through years of:

  • Chronic stress
  • Poor boundaries
  • Lack of rest
  • Constant performance pressure
  • Emotional suppression
  • Isolation

Many high performers become experts at looking fine while falling apart internally.

Because they continue producing results, few people notice the warning signs.

Kenny admitted that while his career appeared successful, internally he was struggling with exhaustion, addiction, and a growing loss of identity.

Why High Achievers Often Refuse Help

Many people avoid asking for help because they believe they are supposed to have the answers.

Leaders often feel pressure to remain strong.

Business owners feel pressure to remain confident.

Parents feel pressure to remain stable.

The result is isolation.

The very people who need support most often convince themselves they should carry everything alone.

The Role of Faith in Recovery

One of the most powerful moments in Kenny’s story came during what he calls “Grace in the Mirror.”

At his lowest point, Kenny looked in the mirror and realized the answers he had been searching for were not found in another achievement, another title, or another accomplishment.

Recovery would begin when he stopped running.

Instead of condemning himself, he experienced what he describes as a moment of grace.

That moment changed everything.

Grace Creates What Performance Never Can

Performance says:

“Prove your worth.”

Grace says:

“You already have worth.”

Performance demands more.

Grace invites healing.

Performance creates pressure.

Grace creates freedom.

Kenny’s recovery journey became less about fixing himself and more about accepting help, embracing honesty, and allowing God to rebuild what achievement never could.

Why Community Matters in Recovery

One recurring theme throughout this conversation was community.

Recovery thrives in connection.

Addiction thrives in isolation.

Whether someone is struggling with alcohol, burnout, anxiety, depression, or identity issues, healing becomes significantly harder when attempted alone.

Kenny spoke about the impact of friends, family, recovery professionals, prayer groups, and complete strangers who supported him during both recovery and his cancer battle.

Their presence reminded him that he was never truly alone.

The 500-Pound Telephone

One of the most relatable moments in the episode was the discussion around what many recovery communities call “the 500-pound telephone.”

People often know they should call someone.

They know they need help.

They know they are struggling.

Yet picking up the phone feels impossible.

The fear of admitting weakness can be overwhelming.

The lesson is simple:

The call that feels impossible is often the one that starts healing.

A Cancer Diagnosis During Recovery

As if addiction recovery and burnout were not enough, Kenny also faced a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Fortunately, early detection allowed doctors to identify the cancer before it progressed further.

His story serves as an important reminder that health matters.

Many men neglect preventative care.

Many avoid annual checkups.

Many ignore symptoms until problems become severe.

Kenny’s experience demonstrates why proactive healthcare can save lives.

What Kenny Wants Others to Remember

The message Kenny repeatedly returned to throughout this conversation was simple:

You are not alone.

Many people believe their struggles define them.

Many believe their failures are permanent.

Many believe they have exhausted all available help.

None of those beliefs are true.

Healing starts when honesty replaces hiding.

Recovery begins when someone asks for help.

Freedom grows when grace becomes stronger than shame.
