(As featured on “Insights & Straight Talk with Rodd Duff”)
In one of his most transparent conversations to date, Wesley Farnsworth joined host Rodd Duff on the podcast Insights & Straight Talk to talk about faith, shame, recovery, and what it really means to rebuild your life after failure. The hour-and-a-half live discussion was raw, hopeful, and practical — the kind of conversation that reminds listeners that God can redeem any story, no matter how far it’s drifted off course.
A Pastor’s Kid Who Lost — and Rediscovered — Faith
Wesley shared his early years growing up as a pastor’s kid in the Assemblies of God church, where he learned all the right words and actions but hadn’t yet developed a personal relationship with God.
“I knew about Him,” Wesley said, “but I didn’t really know Him.”
That gap between head knowledge and heart transformation widened through adolescence. A single moment of curiosity led him into pornography, an addiction that would follow him into adulthood. Outwardly, he was accomplished: a decorated U.S. Air Force photographer who captured historic events, traveled the world, and built a successful career. Inwardly, he was trapped in shame and secrecy.
Discovering Recovery and the Power of Community
Everything began to change when Wesley found Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recovery program for anyone struggling with hurts, habits, or hang-ups.
“It took me a long time to work up the courage to go,” he admitted. “Because going means admitting you have a problem — and I didn’t want anyone to think I did.”
But one unexpected question during his first meeting — “Is there anything else?” — prompted a breakthrough. For the first time, Wesley voiced the addiction he’d hidden for nearly 20 years. Instead of condemnation, he received compassion. That moment became the turning point.
“Instead of hearing, ‘You’re disgusting,’ I heard, ‘You’re brave.’ That changed everything.”
From there, he began walking through recovery with honesty, accountability, and faith. Prayer, journaling, Scripture, and community became the foundation for a new life.
Changing Your Stars
The idea for his book, The Blueprint of Becoming: A Practical Guide to Faith, Failure, and Finding Your Way Forward, was born in one of those meetings. A testimony reminded him of a line from A Knight’s Tale:
“You can’t change your stars.”
Wesley realized how often people believe that lie, that their past mistakes or family history define their destiny. His book pushes back with the opposite truth: through Christ, you can change your stars.
“Our past doesn’t disqualify us; it prepares us,” Wesley told Rodd. “When we stop trying to manage our brokenness on our own and surrender it to God, transformation begins.”
From Shame to Surrender
The conversation turned to practical faith, how to forgive yourself, rebuild trust, and walk with confidence after failure. Wesley described how true recovery isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress and surrender.
“You can’t manage sin. You can’t manage life on your own. You have to rely on God.”
He shared how faith is maintained not through performance but through daily habits: prayer, Scripture, worship, and community. When asked how he stays grounded during tough seasons — including an ongoing job search — Wesley was candid:
“I pray, I listen to worship music, and I stay in the Word. I’ve seen God provide time and time again. My job is to be faithful; His is to provide.”
Lessons for Life, Leadership, and Speaking
Throughout the interview, Wesley connected biblical wisdom with real-life application — the same approach that defines his speaking and writing. Whether addressing addiction, leadership, or spiritual growth, his message centers on three unshakable truths:
-
- Your past doesn’t define you.
It may explain your journey, but it doesn’t determine your destination. - You can’t heal what you hide.
Freedom begins when we bring hidden pain into the light. - God redeems what you surrender.
True change comes through obedience, not self-effort.
- Your past doesn’t define you.
A Message Worth Sharing
