Greek Christian Identity: Can You Be Greek & Still Follow Christ?
In Episode 16 of Unmasked, I sat down with Dr. Lyman Montgomery, an ordained elder, speaker, consultant, and author of the groundbreaking book Sacred Not Sinful. Together, we tackled one of the most misunderstood questions in Christian culture today: Can you be Greek and still faithfully follow Christ?
For many believers involved in Greek-letter organizations—especially Black Greek Letter Organizations—this tension is deeply personal. Some feel unseen by the church. Others feel misunderstood by the culture, or worse, judged for participating in fraternity or sorority life while trying to honor Jesus.
Dr. Montgomery speaks directly to this tension, offering clarity rooted in Scripture, history, and lived experience.
A Story Marked by Healing, Identity, and Calling
Before becoming a respected leader, Dr. Montgomery survived childhood trauma, abuse, and profound emotional wounds. These experiences led him to hide behind masks—silence, performance, and relationships built out of survival rather than security. His story mirrors the heartbeat of the Unmasked podcast: removing the façade, confronting the pain, and letting God heal what we hide.
As an adult, he joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., seeking brotherhood and community. Over time, he found himself facing criticism from Christians who believed Greek life was incompatible with Christian faith.
That tension birthed his book Sacred Not Sinful and launched his mission: help Christians understand that faithfulness to Christ and membership in a Greek organization can coexist when rooted in the right posture of the heart.
The PROOF Framework: A Biblical Response
During the episode, Dr. Montgomery introduced a framework he created called PROOF, which addresses the five main objections Christians face when engaging with Greek life:
P – Process: The pledge or rush process is often misunderstood. Historically, Greek life valued scholarship, community, discipline, and brotherhood—virtues aligned with Christian values.
R – Rituals: While some rituals include references to Greek deities or symbolism, Dr. Montgomery explains that admiration is not the same as worship—much like how we view the “Statue of Liberty” or days of the week named after mythological figures.
O – Oath: Many professions—medicine, law, military service—use oaths with historical pagan roots. What matters is the heart, intention, and meaning, not the ancient source material.
O – Obscurity: Secrecy in Greek life parallels the early church, where believers used symbols and coded language for safety. What you value, you protect.
F – Founders: The origins of institutions don’t imprison their present purpose. Redemption, reclaiming, and repurposing are woven through Scripture and central to Christian identity.
Identity Anchored in Christ, Purpose Lived Out in Culture
Throughout the episode, Dr. Montgomery emphasizes a freeing truth: Your identity is in Christ—not your organization, not your past, and not your cultural background.
But God often calls us into cultural spaces—not out of them.
Just as Paul quoted Greek poets to evangelize in Athens, Christians today can use their platforms, networks, and affiliations as mission fields. Your fraternity or sorority becomes a place to shine, not shrink back.
A Word to Those Wrestling With the Tension
If you’re a Christian struggling to navigate your faith within your Greek organization, Dr. Montgomery offers this encouragement:
“God is not mad at you. He’s not ashamed of you. He redeems, reclaims, and repurposes everything—including your affiliation.”
You are loved. You are chosen. And God can use you right where you are.
Take the First Step: Walk in Confidence
This week, Dr. Montgomery challenges listeners to take one action step:
Accept that God wants to use you—fully, intentionally, and without you abandoning your identity.
Reflect on your purpose. Pray for clarity. Step forward boldly, knowing God called you to be salt and light in every sphere of your life—including Greek life.
