Healed to Heal: How Surrender, Scripture, and God’s Power Transformed Kathleen Johnson’s Life
On Episode 10 of Unmasked with Wesley Farnsworth, Wesley welcomes Kathleen Johnson, a woman whose testimony is a reminder that God still heals, still speaks, and still restores what feels beyond repair.
Kathleen didn’t grow up far from faith. In fact, her childhood was rooted in the church. Her dad was an elder. Her mom played piano and sang in the choir. She grew up studying Scripture and learning the language of Christianity.
But like so many of us, there came a moment where she had to decide:
Is this my parents’ faith—or mine?
That question didn’t fully come into focus until life fell apart.
Growing Up in Faith… and Facing Real Life
Kathleen shares that she was “a Christ follower first,” shaped by a faithful home where her parents modeled steady, sincere belief. Their faith wasn’t performative; it was lived.
But as she moved into adulthood—college, marriage, and the complexity of real life—she discovered what many of us do: secondhand faith isn’t strong enough to carry first-hand pain.
She went to church.
She knew the verses.
She believed in God.
But when her marriage crumbled, something deeper was exposed.
When a Good Thing Becomes an Idol
Kathleen is honest about what she discovered in the rubble of her divorce: she had unknowingly turned her concept of Christian marriage into an idol.
Her hope, security, and sense of identity had become attached to the relationship. When it shattered, fear rushed in to fill the void.
Instead of standing firmly on the unshakable character of God, she realized she had been standing on something fragile—her idea of how life should look.
“When you put your hope in something you can lose, you’re exposed when it’s gone.”
That realization became a turning point. She could either stay stuck in fear and disappointment, or she could seek God in a deeper, more honest way than ever before.
She chose to seek.
From Fear to Surrender
In the episode, Kathleen describes a moment during online dating when a Christian man stopped her mid-conversation and said plainly:
“You know God does not want you to live in fear.”
Those simple words pierced through the noise and forced her to face a hard truth: fear had become normal in her life.
So she did the only thing that really works—she took it to God.
She didn’t try to “fake faith” or pretend everything was fine. She began to seek God intentionally, especially through Scripture memory and meditation. Not as a legalistic discipline, but as a way to retrain her mind.
Verses like Isaiah 26:3 took on new meaning:
“You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
Kathleen recognized that her focus and her freedom were directly connected. If her mind stayed fixed on fear, worst-case scenarios, and self-protection, she would never walk in peace. But if her mind stayed fixed on God, His Word, and His character, fear would lose its grip.
Scripture Girl and the Power of the Word
As she leaned into this new way of seeking God, Kathleen became passionate about Scripture memory. Eventually, people started calling her “Scripture Girl.”
Far from a cheesy label, that nickname captured something deeply true about her journey: she wasn’t just reading the Bible—she was internalizing it.
She talks in the episode about:
Using tools like Bible memory apps
Recording herself reading verses and listening back
Meditating on Scripture until it became part of her instinct
This wasn’t about religious performance. It was about learning to respond like Jesus did—answering lies, fear, and accusation with:
“It is written…”
Over time, this process rewired her thinking, slowly shifting her from a fear-based life to a faith-based one.
A Miracle Doctors Said Was Impossible
While all of this was happening, Kathleen also faced chronic pain that doctors said had no permanent solution. She knew the verses about healing. She believed God could heal. But she wasn’t seeing breakthrough.
In that tension, she sensed God inviting her to deepen her trust—not just in His ability to heal in general, but in His willingness to move in her situation.
As she continued to renew her mind, meditate on healing promises, and walk in surrender, something shifted.
She experienced a divine healing that doctors had said wasn’t possible.
That healing was not just a moment of relief—it was a revelation of God’s heart. It showed her that:
God sees the whole person: spirit, soul, and body
The Holy Spirit can bring life even to our physical bodies
Healing is not just about comfort—it’s often about calling
Healed to Heal: When Your Story Isn’t Just for You
That miracle—and the stories of others who experienced similar breakthroughs—eventually became the foundation for Kathleen’s book Healed to Heal.
The message at the core of the book, and this episode, is simple but weighty:
When God heals you, it’s never just for you.
Your story is meant to be shared.
Your freedom is meant to free others.
Your testimony is meant to glorify God and build hope in the people around you.
Kathleen highlights how many men and women throughout church history and today have experienced healing and then stepped into ministry—praying for others, sharing their stories, and watching God repeat the miracle again and again.
Like Revelation 12:11 says,
“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…”
Your testimony isn’t an optional accessory to your faith.
It’s a weapon.
Learning to Live Unmasked
Throughout the conversation, Kathleen and Wesley circle back to the heart of the Unmasked podcast: taking off the filters, dropping the performance, and living honestly before God and others.
That means:
Admitting where fear has been driving you
Acknowledging where you’ve placed your hope in something other than Christ
Being honest about your pain, questions, and doubts
Saying “yes” when God asks you to share your story—even if it’s vulnerable
Kathleen’s story is not polished perfection. It’s a journey through real hurt, real fear, real questions—and real encounters with a very real God.
A Word for Anyone in the Middle of the Story
If you’re reading this and you feel stuck in fear, disappointment, or a situation that seems impossible, Kathleen’s story carries a message for you:
God has not forgotten you.
He is not done with you.
Your pain is not wasted.
And when He brings healing, restoration, or breakthrough—He will also invite you to share it.
Because you are not just healed to move on.
You are healed to heal.
