Hearing God’s Voice During Seasons of Change

Why So Many Christians Struggle to Hear God’s Voice

One of the most common questions believers ask is simple:

“How do I know if God is speaking to me?”

The question becomes even more important during seasons of uncertainty.

When a relationship changes, a career shifts, a ministry evolves, or life takes an unexpected turn, people naturally begin searching for direction. They want clarity. They want certainty. They want to know what God is saying.

In a recent conversation on UNMASKED, ministry leader and author Charity Majors shared powerful insights about hearing God’s voice, navigating transition, and understanding what she calls “divine discontentment.”

Her message challenges a common assumption.

Sometimes the discomfort you’re feeling isn’t a sign that something is wrong.

Sometimes it’s evidence that God is preparing you for something new.

What Is Divine Discontentment?

Divine discontentment is different from ordinary dissatisfaction.

Unhealthy dissatisfaction often comes from comparison.

You look at someone else’s life.

Someone else’s success.

Someone else’s platform.

Someone else’s opportunities.

And you begin wondering why your life doesn’t look the same.

Divine discontentment works differently.

It often appears when God’s grace begins shifting toward a new assignment.

The things that once energized you begin feeling heavy.

The opportunities that once excited you lose momentum.

The doors that once opened easily begin closing.

At the same time, new opportunities begin emerging.

New conversations happen.

New relationships form.

New interests develop.

God starts creating holy tension that pushes you toward greater dependence on Him.

Hearing God’s Voice Starts With Relationship

Many Christians approach hearing God’s voice as if they’re trying to crack a secret code.

But Scripture presents a different picture.

God isn’t trying to hide from His children.

He’s trying to communicate with them.

Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice.”

That means hearing God’s voice isn’t reserved for pastors, prophets, or ministry leaders.

It is part of normal Christian life.

The challenge is learning how God speaks.

The Different Ways God Speaks

One of the most helpful insights from Charity’s teaching is recognizing that God’s communication isn’t limited to one method.

Throughout Scripture, God speaks through:

Scripture

The Bible remains the primary foundation for hearing God’s voice.

God will never contradict His written Word.

Impressions and Promptings

Many believers experience God’s guidance through gentle impressions that align with Scripture and produce peace.

Dreams and Visions

Throughout the Bible, God frequently communicated through dreams, pictures, and visions.

Spiritual Discernment

Sometimes believers simply know something they couldn’t have known naturally.

Atmosphere and Feeling

Others recognize spiritual realities through discernment and sensitivity to what is happening around them.

The goal is not chasing experiences.

The goal is developing relationship.

Why Identity Matters When Seeking Direction

One of the biggest obstacles to hearing God’s voice is misplaced identity.

Many people build their identity around:

  • Their career
  • Their ministry
  • Their marriage
  • Their success
  • Their accomplishments

The problem comes when those things change.

If your identity is rooted in temporary things, every transition creates a crisis.

But when your identity is rooted in being God’s son or daughter, circumstances lose their power to define you.

You stop asking:

“What do I do?”

And start asking:

“Who does God say I am?”

That shift changes everything.

What Loss Can Teach Us About God’s Presence

One of the most powerful moments in Charity’s story involves walking through devastating loss.

After losing both grandparents and later losing a child, she found herself asking difficult questions.

Questions many believers wrestle with:

Why?

Where is God?

Can I trust Him?

Is He still good?

Instead of receiving easy answers, she encountered God’s presence.

That experience reshaped her understanding of faith.

Sometimes God doesn’t immediately explain our suffering.

Sometimes He meets us inside it.

And often those moments create the deepest intimacy with Him.

Practical Steps for Hearing God’s Voice

If you’re seeking clarity right now, start here:

Spend Time Listening

Prayer is not only talking.

It’s listening.

Create space for silence.

Ask Better Questions

Instead of asking:

“What should I do?”

Ask:

“God, what are You saying?”

Stay Grounded in Scripture

Every impression should be filtered through God’s Word.

Stop Comparing Your Season

Comparison creates noise.

Focus on your assignment, not someone else’s.

Remember Your Identity

You are not defined by your performance.

You are defined by whose you are.

Final Thoughts

Many people spend years trying to escape restlessness.

But sometimes that restlessness is an invitation.

An invitation to trust God more deeply.

An invitation to hear His voice more clearly.

An invitation to step into the next season He has prepared.

If you’re feeling stuck today, don’t immediately assume something is wrong.

It may be that God is gently leading you somewhere new.
