Surface Faith vs Real Intimacy with God

There’s a version of faith that looks strong—but feels empty.

You show up.
You serve.
You say the right things.

From the outside, everything looks solid. But internally, something feels off. You’re going through the motions, but the connection you once felt with God isn’t there in the same way.

And if you’re honest, you might not even know when it started.

This is what we’re talking about in Episode 46 of Unmasked—the difference between surface-level faith and real intimacy with God.

The Danger of Surface Faith

Surface faith isn’t always obvious.

It doesn’t look like rebellion.
It doesn’t look like walking away from God.

In fact, it often looks like doing all the right things.

That’s what makes it so dangerous.

Dr. Rosemarie Downer pointed out something that many people have felt but haven’t been able to articulate: the church, in many places, has shifted toward something more performance-driven than presence-driven.

Less rooted in Scripture.
Less anchored in prayer.
More focused on presentation and experience.

Now, that doesn’t mean God isn’t moving. It doesn’t mean truth isn’t being preached. But it does raise an important question:

Are we cultivating depth, or are we maintaining appearances?

Because those are not the same thing.

When Your Soul Is Running on Empty

One of the clearest signs of surface faith is this: your activity for God is increasing, but your connection with Him is decreasing.

You’re busy.
You’re involved.
You’re even leading.

But your soul feels tired.

That disconnect is often tied to something we don’t talk about enough—emotional health.

Dr. Downer made it clear: you cannot separate spiritual health from emotional health.

If you’re emotionally drained, discouraged, or carrying unresolved wounds, it will impact your relationship with God and how you show up for others.

You might still function.

But you won’t be whole.

Why Emotional Health Matters

Many believers have been taught to focus on spiritual disciplines while ignoring emotional realities.

Pray more.
Serve more.

And while those things matter, they are not substitutes for emotional healing.

If you’re struggling with fear, discouragement, or frustration, pretending those things don’t exist doesn’t make you stronger—it makes you disconnected.

Authentic faith doesn’t hide those struggles.

It brings them into the light.

It says, “God, this is where I’m at right now,” instead of trying to clean things up before coming to Him.

Because the truth is—He already knows.

The Weight of Unforgiveness

Another major barrier to deep intimacy with God is unforgiveness.

And this is where things get real.

Unforgiveness feels justified.
It feels protective.
It feels like holding someone accountable.

But in reality, it does something else—it traps you.

Dr. Downer described it perfectly: unforgiveness is like building a prison and locking yourself inside of it.

You’re waiting for someone to repay a debt they may never repay.

And in the meantime, your peace is slowly being drained.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean what happened was okay.

It means you’re choosing freedom over control.

It means you’re releasing something that was never meant for you to carry long-term.

And when you do that, something shifts.

What Real Intimacy with God Looks Like

So if surface faith is about appearance, what does real intimacy look like?

It’s not complicated—but it is intentional.

Real intimacy with God looks like:

  • Talking to Him honestly, not just formally
  • Recognizing His voice, even in quiet moments
  • Inviting Him into everyday decisions
  • Being aware of His presence, not just His power

It’s relationship.

Not performance.
Not routine.
Not obligation.

And like any relationship, it grows through time and consistency.

A Simple Step to Go Deeper

If you’re listening to all of this and thinking, “I want that—but I don’t know where to start,” here’s a simple step you can take this week:

Set a time to meet with God.

Not randomly.
Not when it’s convenient.

Intentionally.

Treat it like you would any important relationship:

  • Pick a time
  • Protect it
  • Show up consistently

Start small if you need to.

Five minutes.
Ten minutes.

But be consistent.

Because intimacy isn’t built in moments—it’s built over time.

Final Thought

If your faith feels surface-level right now, you’re not alone.

And you’re not stuck.

What you’re feeling might actually be an invitation—not to do more, but to go deeper.

To move from performance to presence.
From activity to connection.
From knowing about God to actually knowing Him.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what we’re all after.

Not a faith that looks good.

But a faith that’s real.
