All Things Faith Walk – Journeying Through Life: A Conversation About Grace, Recovery & Starting Again
If you’ve ever felt stuck between who you were and who you want to become, this conversation might hit home. I recently joined Dr. Rosemary Downer on her podcast All Things Faithwalk to talk about the messy, beautiful, often complicated process of transformation — and why it’s never too late for God to rewrite your story.
From growing up as a pastor’s kid to navigating addiction and eventually finding freedom, this episode became one of the most honest conversations I’ve had behind a microphone.
Here’s a recap of what we unpacked together.
“It’s Never Too Late to Restart”
Dr. Downer opened the episode with a message I wish more people could hear:
It is never too late for restoration or redemption.
No matter how far you feel you’ve drifted, God has a way of pulling us from point A to point B with grace that doesn’t run out. And that set the tone for everything that followed.
Growing Up a Pastor’s Kid — and the Pressure That Comes With It
I shared about growing up as a PK — pastor’s kid — and the invisible expectations that come with that title. Even with supportive parents, I carried a pressure to “be the good kid,” to look a certain way, act a certain way, and reflect well on my family and church.
Over time, that pressure turned into codependency. I started caring more about how people viewed me than how God viewed me. That identity crisis set the stage for a struggle that would follow me for years.
The Slippery Slope of Curiosity
When I was young, a single moment of curiosity opened the door to pornography. I didn’t understand the impact at the time. I didn’t even have the language for what I was seeing.
But one moment became a habit.
A habit became a secret.
And a secret grew into a twenty-year addiction.
Shame told me I was the only one dealing with it. Shame told me I couldn’t tell anyone. Shame kept me quiet — and the enemy works best in silence.
If you’re stuck in secrecy right now, hear this: you are not alone, and you don’t have to stay stuck.
Breaking the Silence: Finding Community in Celebrate Recovery
Eventually, I joined Celebrate Recovery — a Christ-centered program for any hurt, habit, or hang-up. It became one of the safest places I’ve ever been.

The truth is, you can’t heal what you hide. Recovery happens when you step out of isolation and into community.
The North Star & Our “Current Stars”
Dr. Downer and I talked about Chapter 4 of my book, The Blueprint of Becoming, where I describe “stars” as a metaphor for the areas of life that guide us — relationships, career, faith, health, emotions, money, habits.
The question is simple:
Are the stars you’re following aligned with God, or pulling you off course?
Sometimes we have to name what’s bright and what’s broken. What needs to be strengthened and what needs to be surrendered.
When God becomes the North Star, everything else begins to realign.
When Failure Becomes a Teacher
One of the big themes we hit was the idea that failure is not final.
Failure is a teacher.
Failure is a mirror.
Failure is a wake-up call.
I often tell people we learn far more from failure than we ever learn from success. And sometimes the stumble becomes the very thing God uses to redirect our lives.
That’s what “failing forward” looks like.
Overcoming Obstacles: Pride, Shame & Daily Surrender
One of my biggest obstacles was pride — the fear of being honest about my weaknesses — and shame, which kept me silent for years.
Transformation didn’t begin when I “fixed myself.”
It began when I admitted I couldn’t.
Romans 12:2 became my anchor:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Transformation isn’t a one-time moment — it’s a lifestyle of daily surrender.
A Word for Anyone Struggling Right Now
If you only take away one thing from the conversation, let it be this:
You are not alone. You’re not condemned. And your story isn’t over.
No temptation is unique to you (1 Corinthians 10:13).
There is always a way out.
There is always grace.
There is always hope.
You may feel like you’re functioning in the dark while wearing a mask in public, but God doesn’t ask you to pretend. He invites you to come as you are.
