Celebrate Recovery Testimony: Mike’s Redemption Story
What does it look like when God redeems a story that feels too shattered to repair?
In this episode of UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth, you’ll meet Mike—an Iowan with deep roots in church life who didn’t just “drift” into darkness. His journey included trauma, addiction, violence, prison, and moments that should have ended his life more than once.
But what makes Mike’s story so powerful isn’t the chaos of his past—it’s the clarity of his transformation.
This is a Celebrate Recovery testimony that doesn’t stay on the surface. Mike talks about what it means when faith moves from something you know to something you live—what he calls head knowledge vs. heart knowledge—and how Jesus reshaped his identity from the inside out.
When Church Was His Identity—And Then Life Broke It
Mike grew up in a small-town church environment where nearly every relationship in his life was connected to faith. But trauma entered early, and anger became a constant companion. As he got older, injuries and painkillers opened doors he never expected—and eventually his first drug experience wasn’t a “gateway.” It was straight into something darker.
Along the way, he wrestled with something many people quietly feel: when you’ve seen hypocrisy, judgment, or people getting “shot while wounded,” it can distort your view of faith—even when you still believe God is real.
Mike’s story doesn’t excuse the choices. It just tells the truth about how a life can unravel—and how God can still pull someone back.
A Life That Should’ve Ended—And Didn’t
Mike describes multiple near-death experiences and a season where he admits he was done living, but not willing to take his own life—so he lived in ways that made death feel inevitable.
One moment stands out: being shot and left in a remote area, calling 911 and telling the operator where to find his body.
But he didn’t die.
He calls it what it was: God said, “not yet.”
That moment became a catalyst—but even then, change didn’t happen instantly. Which is part of why this testimony hits: it’s not “one altar call and everything is perfect.” It’s the messy, real road of transformation.
Recovery, Community, and the Shift to a Real Walk With Jesus
Mike had already experienced secular recovery spaces and respected them for what they can offer: honesty, accountability, and community.
But what he couldn’t escape was this: so much of what helped people heal was deeply biblical in principle—confession, amends, inventory, humility, gratitude, transformation.
Eventually, he and his wife were invited into Celebrate Recovery, and it clicked at a deeper level:
not vague spirituality
not “a higher power” you can shrink into something manageable
but the one true God and a Christ-centered path to healing
One of the strongest lines in this episode is the simple truth both of you echo:
The program isn’t the savior. Jesus is.
CR is a catalyst. Christ is the change.
Head Knowledge vs. Heart Knowledge
Mike doesn’t describe his growth like a switch flipping. He describes it like something that “trickles”—slowly, steadily, over time—until it reaches the core.
He explains how prayer became less like a religious task and more like a relationship. How gratitude replaced fear. How he stopped obsessing over other people’s sins and started focusing on loving people the way Jesus commanded.
And that shift affected everything: his peace, his mindset, his marriage, and even his restored relationships with his kids.
The Encouragement Mike Wishes Everyone Could Hear
When you asked him what he would say to someone stuck in shame, addiction, or unworthiness, he didn’t give a cute line.
He gave the truth:
You are loved. Period.
And he challenged listeners to take a first step—small, simple, consistent:
open the Bible
pray
sit in stillness
make a conscious effort
Then—over time—it stops being forced. It becomes natural. And life starts to change from the inside out.
This episode is for the listener who thinks they’re beyond repair.
You’re not.
